Art As A Channel For Personal Transformation
I make art because I love color, fabric, and paint. I love lines of stitching or ink to define a design. I make art because it makes me feel good. It allows me to meditate and transform paper, paint, line, fabric, and stitch into a cohesive piece. I am a self-taught artist and seamstress whose work is informed by my love of using existing resources and vivid color.
My background as a midwife, mother, and caretaker informs the circular themes in much of my work. With a life-pausing diagnosis of Young Onset Parkinson’s disease, making art has channeled a personal transformation into defining myself as a writer, artist, and advocate.
My favorite palette of blues, pinks, and purples juxtaposed with gold aims to relax and bring calm beauty and messages of transformation. My quilt pieces reflect my deep love of texture and the need to use every little bit of resource. All of my work uses scraps acquired from the vintage stacks of my grandmother, my beloved neighbor, and mentor, and previous projects.
I love the process of making something from nothing. I don’t use patterns and I don’t sketch with pencil. I hope those that see my work find the joy that I felt creating it.
